Comparing apples with pears
There are two villages in Brandenburg called Ribbeck.
One is situated in the Havelland district and has become world-famous thanks to a poem by Theodor Fontane. This poem tells the story of the generous Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland. It is said that he would always reach over the fence to hand pears from his garden to children from the village passing by. When he sensed his death approaching, he instructed that a pear be placed in his grave with him. From this, a new pear tree has sprouted, which continues to provide fruit for the children.
The other Ribbeck is situated in the Oberhavel district on the „Klosterweg“ trail in Brandenburg. Yet few outsiders ever find their way here. This is a portrait of the lesser-known village of Ribbeck. Few pears grow here, but all the more apples.
One shouldn’t compare the two.
