Night-time thoughts
What goes through our minds and what images come to mind when we’re still out and about late at night, when we’re travelling home on the last train or the last bus? When we lie awake at night, unable to sleep, and our thoughts keep going round and round in our heads? Or when we deliberately avoid sleep? What dream images appear, force themselves upon us, and hold us captive?
Eight members of the artists’ group Blaue Ampel have explored these questions and invite us to share in their night-time scenes through a wide variety of visual worlds:
There is snow that brightens the darkness, and one feels as though one can hear how it also muffles the sounds. Silence spreads; (scattered) warm lights promise life and a sense of security. There are glaring lights and harsh shadows that repel us and reveal a rather inhospitable world. Blurred figures appear and vanish again into the night.
Narrow, dreamlike paths wind their way through vast landscapes, and a longing for the wider, real world begins to take hold. Absurd and eerie worlds open up – and in the morning, a hearty breakfast puts an end to the night’s musings.

The series shown here was created in 2011, and it was in my mind then and remains there today. Less often. The feeling afterwards. The evening, the night is over. The journey home. Swaying, tired, and those few shadows who, too, had celebrated, loved or been cast aside. Gathered here by chance.
