Inhabiting the Greyscale
The world we live in is full of stark contrasts. The press would is more interested in sensational events than in day to day matters, social media reinforce this tendency. While lots of attention is given to conflicts and catastrophes, good news gets less exposure. In politics, there seems to be only right and wrong. Adversaries are called liars, sweeping claims are fairly common, whether they are true seems less important. Those who are noisiest and who polarize opinion most seem to get heard most easily. The advertising industry also loves lots of bright colour, firms try to outdo each other with promises of bliss. In public discourse all that is unspectacular and quiet seems to fall by the wayside, as does all too often tolerance for other ways of living.

In the exhibition „Inhabiting the Greyscale“ the group Blaue Ampel has set out to explore precisely these subtle shadings, the wide spectrum between black and white. Over a considerable period, the members have discussed the topic with each other and subsequently each member has developed an approach of his or her own. Some works interpret the theme from an aesthetical angle, playing with muted colours and the various shades of grey, with landscapes appearing from dense mist or covered in snow. Other works comment on society, drawing attention to the importance of personal freedom or warning of the consequences of no longer seeing human beings as individuals but only as part of a group. A third approach considers the in-between states of the human soul and the realm between waking and sleep.
