Memorial I

In German, the fallen are those who did not return, the dead who gave their lives for a cause. They stumbled beforehand and simply fell down. That sounds so banal. But there was a war and the fallen caused others to stumble and fall. Monuments are erected to the fallen where you can read their names. These names tell you nothing today. They stand for the good cause for which they fell. The monuments stand on both sides.

In a conflict, those on opposite sides only see the black and the white. The shades of grey no longer exist. They have been abolished in order to justify fighting, dying and mourning. If there were more shades of grey, there would be more questions with answers that could end the conflict. The war memorials are places of remembrance for the fallen, the survivors and the after-born of the good cause. They commemorate the black or the white, but not the shades of grey.
